CSI? Adorable. Ernst Gennat was doing this in the 1920s. 🕵️‍♂️

Before forensic dramas, True Crime podcasts and high-tech CSI equipment, there was Ernst Gennat — the legendary Berlin detective who helped revolutionise modern murder investigations.

In Berlin 1926, Gennat established what is widely regarded as the world’s first dedicated homicide investigation unit and pioneered systematic crime scene investigation. No DNA databases, no digital forensics — just methodical detective work, scientific thinking and an eye for detail that would make Sherlock Holmes raise an approving eyebrow.

But his legacy doesn’t stop there.

Gennat also inspired author Volker Kutscher in creating his famous Gereon Rath crime novels, set in the turbulent world of 1920s and 1930s Berlin. Those novels became the inspiration for Babylon Berlin, the acclaimed German TV series broadcast on ARD, SKY and other networks. 🎬

So, the next time you watch a modern Krimi or binge-watch CSI, spare a thought for the man who helped lay the groundwork for the way we investigate murder today.

Turns out, the Golden Twenties had some rather modern ideas. 🎩🔎

👇 Had you heard of Ernst Gennat before? Or did you think systematic crime scene investigation was a modern invention?
