Ashley Smith stood inside her new bookstore, Under the Covers at 17009 Lorain Ave. in Cleveland, talking with the kind of excitement you cannot fake. The shop opens today in West Park, and last night’s gathering served as a sneak peek of what she has created. The place already felt alive. Ashley told me she once worked in recruiting, but kept carrying around the idea that she wanted to build something of her own. Then, during a trip to Salt Lake City, she walked into a romance bookstore and said it hit her like a thunderbolt. She knew right there what she needed to do next and started looking for spaces for her dream bookstore.

Ashley was born in Cuyahoga Falls and has lived in Fairview Park for the last six years. What she built here comes directly from that love of romance novels and the belief that books still bring people of all kinds together. You could feel it in every conversation last night. Readers wandered the shop talking about favorite authors, while others who write online about new spots around Cleveland stopped in to see what she had created. Everyone seemed genuinely happy for her, and just as impressed by how beautiful the store looks.

I always admire people who grind for years trying to make a dream real, especially when they decide to bet on themselves in the region they call home. Ashley did exactly that. West Park now has both The Reading Room and Under the Covers adding life to the street, and it feels like something good is happening. Hopefully Cleveland keeps supporting independent bookstores and the amazing people behind them, because places like this give a neighborhood its soul. If you have a friend obsessed with romance novels, or if you are one yourself, stop by this weekend. Ashley has built something special here, and you leave hoping this new bookstore becomes one of those lasting neighborhood places people talk about for years.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced that the government will establish fast-track courts to speed up trials in examination paper leak cases, declaring that those who attempt to destroy the future of India’s youth “will not be spared.” The Prime Minister said there was nothing more important than protecting the welfare and future of young people. He asserted that the proposed courts would ensure swift proceedings and stringent punishment for individuals and organised groups involved in leaking examination papers. The announcement comes amid widespread anger over alleged irregularities and paper leaks in competitive examinations. Student-led demonstrations have intensified in Delhi, with protesters demanding accountability, stronger safeguards for examinations and action against those responsible for compromising the careers of lakhs of aspirants. Modi had earlier described paper leaks as a “grave sin” and said the government was working to make the examination system foolproof. He also called for the strictest possible action against offenders and urged political parties not to treat the future of students as a partisan issue. India already has the Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) Act, 2024, which treats the leakage of question papers and answer keys as an offence. The law provides imprisonment of three to five years for certain offences, while organised examination fraud can attract five to ten years in jail and a minimum fine of ₹1 crore. However, concerns have continued over delays in investigation and prosecution. The government’s latest move is aimed at ensuring that accused individuals are tried quickly instead of cases remaining pending for years.
