A 3-year-old boy lost his life during an armed confrontation involving his father and Las Vegas police, and months later, questions remain about whose gunfire killed him.

Kentre Baker and his father, 28-year-old former Western Kentucky football player Quinton Baker, died following a February 3 confrontation with Las Vegas police.

Officers responded after Kentre’s mother, Raneka Pate, reported that Baker had assaulted her and a friend and threatened the child. Police say Baker came outside carrying Kentre while pointing a g*n at him. Two officers opened fire, and Baker also fired his weapon. Baker died at the scene, and Kentre died at a hospital.

At the time, police publicly blamed Baker for his son’s death. But during a public review this week, Detective Brian Walter testified that the coroner had not linked the child’s fatal wounds to a specific weapon.

Kentre’s mother had disputed the police account months earlier and retained an attorney. The new testimony does not establish that police fired the fatal shots, but it leaves a question that the department initially presented as answered.
