Dexamethasone (Dex) is a key medication in the treatment of pediatric leukemia. Leukemia cells are very sensitive to steroids - Dex enters the cells and activates signals that tell leukemia cells to stop dividing and self-destruct. But steroids also influence almost every system in the body because they mimic cortisol, one of natural stress hormones. The body shifts into a kind of survival mode: glucose levels rise, hunger signals intensify, the body holds onto salt and water, muscles break down protein for energy, and fat is stored differently. That’s why children on Dex develop intense appetite, swelling around the belly and face (“moon face”), mood swings, sweating, muscle weakness, and trouble sleeping. The good news is that these side effects are temporary and gradually improve after the medication is stopped. Leila has been taking Dex twice a day all May and will stop taking it soon. Хорошая новость в том, что эти побочные эффекты временные и постепенно проходят после отмены препарата. Лейла принимает Dex два раза в день весь май и закончит его в ближайшие дни. Она и дальше будет принимать стероиды, но более короткими курсами.
