Carlee Russell was back in court Wednesday as the fallout from the kidnapping hoax that captivated the country continues more than three years later.

Russell was ordered to pay $17,974.88 in restitution to the City of Hoover after admitting she fabricated her 2023 disappearance.

The case began when Russell called 911 claiming she saw a toddler walking alone along Interstate 459. When police arrived, they found her running car, phone and belongings — but Russell was gone.

Her disappearance triggered a massive 49-hour search involving law enforcement agencies and volunteers before she suddenly returned home and claimed she had been kidnapped. Days later, she admitted there had been no abduction.

Russell eventually pleaded guilty to two misdemeanor false-reporting charges, completed probation and community service, but the restitution remains unfinished.

The money is meant to reimburse Hoover for some of the resources spent searching for Russell during a disappearance authorities later learned never happened.

Now, years after the hoax sparked national panic, the court is still keeping tabs on what she owes.

Many species are made up of microscopic, thread-like structures called hyphae, which can be as little as 2µm wide—a fraction of a strand of human hair.¹ In the case of the Gliophorus pictured here, the fungus’s hyphae form a gelatinous matrix that may help mushroom caps soak up moisture and resist drying.e²,³ Hyphal networks branch and expand, adjusting growth to local nutrients and conditions in their environment.⁴ ¹ Metzen, I.
