#2Pac dropped “TOSS IT UP” 30 years ago today 😮‍💨

The track was 2Pac’s first true posthumous single. There was technically another posthumous release too. 2Pac’s “I Ain’t Mad At Cha” which dropped on September 15th (2 days after his passing). But this was a track the world already knew (released in February 1996 on 2Pac’s “All Eyez On Me” album) and Pac had shot a video for it 4 months prior to his passing. “I Ain’t Mad At Cha” was a track that (for some reason) 2Pac didn’t like and was reluctant to release as a standalone single.

But “Toss It Up” is different and a much more significant release. “Toss It Up” was selected by 2Pac as the lead single off his “Makaveli” album. This choice was made around early August, reflected in the recording timeline and how 2Pac evolved his handwritten track lists for the “Makaveli” album.

At the time, Suge Knight was actively plotting a hostile takeover of Interscope Records. A key move in that takeover was securing Teddy Riley under Death Row. Teddy was one of the hottest producers at the time - and Suge knew it.
Suge approached Teddy to come to Death Row, Teddy told Suge he’d “think about it”. But Teddy never got back to Suge.

Teddy Riley had been working on the Blackstreet album at the time and “No Diggity” was the heat rock Interscope were excited to release. Also, Interscope were working on platforming Dr. Dre as a solo act away from Death Row (Dr. Dre left Death Row in March of 1996), so Jimmy Iovine got Dre on the opening verse - sensing that the track had the potential to be a big hit.

In late July of 1996, Teddy Riley heard 2Pac’s “Toss It Up” on the radio and immediately called Jimmy Iovine to ask whether he’d given the track to 2Pac. Unaware of the 2Pac version of “Toss It Up” over Teddy’s “No Diggity” beat, Jimmy immediately sent a cease and desist to Death Row Records and any radio stations who were playing the record.

Prior to Jimmy Iovine’s intervention, Death Row’s plan was to take the instrumental and strong arm the release of the track. But Jimmy’s cease and desist threw a spanner in the works.
