every fall like clockwork, we move our dinners from the deck to sitting around the fire. WHY // with it getting dark earlier in the colder months, the modern tendency is to move indoors sooner in the day, turn on a bunch of lights, & then wonder why the appetite, emotional regulation, & sleep quality of our kids decrease we instead use *heat* (just like anyone would have before modern electricity) & infrared light from a basic fire in the backyard as a way to gather us outdoors longer this turns into a family anchor for our kids, as we sit around, bundle up, and tell stories until they’re too tired to keep their eyes open any longer WHAT WE NOTICED // — everyone falling asleep quicker — bigger appetites — a deep sense of calm & connection — *zero* bedtime meltdowns — less stirring in the night (we sleep next to our kids, so it’s very easy to be attuned to their well-being at night) my next reel will be alllll about fires episode 1 of my outdoor living series, so stay tuned! in the meantime, comment “backyard” for my whole article on how we’re setting up our backyard this fall!
