The perfect amount of petty.

The AP called Michigan’s Senate race for Democrat Abdul El-Sayed over Republican Mike Rogers, making him the first Muslim elected to the U.S. Senate.

The 42-year-old, born in Michigan to Egyptian immigrant parents, holds an MD from Columbia and a doctorate in public health from Oxford, where he was a Rhodes Scholar. Republicans have repeatedly claimed he’s “not a real doctor,” but that argument is about his medical license, not his degrees. He chose not pursue a clinical residency and instead became Detroit’s health director at 30, later leading health services in Wayne County.

It was a brutal race and a necessary hold for the Dems. He won the Democratic primary by about 1 point over Rep. Haley Stevens, who then endorsed Rogers two days before the election. Rogers raised baseless allegations about El-Sayed’s family ties to the Muslim Brotherhood, and El-Sayed said he was targeted with Islamophobic rhetoric.

In his victory speech, everyone’s fave political crush told Rogers, “Mike, enjoy your retirement.” He also had a message for JD Vance, an Ohio State grad who, as vice president, must swear him in this January: “Wolverine one, Buckeye zero.” And for Trump, who he said struggles with his name: after JD swears him in, “call me Senator.”

He replaces retiring Sen. Gary Peters. Democrats have held this seat since 1979, and they’ve already won control of the Senate overall. 👏🏾
