The fortunes of the richest 0.1% of American households have more than doubled since the end of 2019.

Roughly 137,000 households now control almost $28tn (£21tn) – around 15% of all US household wealth – according to Federal Reserve data.

Their combined wealth increased from $13.4tn to $27.9tn – a jump of $14.5tn – in less than seven years, with around $10tn of the gain coming from stocks and shares.

The ultra-rich have continued to accumulate wealth under both former president Joe Biden and president Donald Trump, who has cut taxes for the rich while slashing social spending. The average household in the top 0.1% is now worth more than $200m.

Meanwhile, the poorest half of Americans – around 67.6m households – own just 2.3% of the country’s wealth, or around $4tn (£3tn), equivalent to roughly $63,000 (£47,000) per household. That means the average 0.1% household owns more than 3,000 times as much as the poorest 50%.

Data released Wednesday by the Bureau of Economic Analysis show that corporations’ profits also rose to record levels as a share of wages, increasing to 11.8% of gross domestic income (GDI) – while workers’ pay and benefits fell below half of GDI for the first time since 1929, the year of the Wall Street crash.

Senator Bernie Sanders described rising inequality in the US as a “rapid movement to oligarchy”, and singled out Elon Musk as a glaring example of social injustice. “The wealthiest man alive now owns more wealth than the bottom 53% of American households. One man,” he said.

“It is taking place all over the world,” he added, “and in my view is the most important economic reality of our times.”

Fun fact: Your body is far more intelligent than most people give it credit for. Right now, without any conscious effort from you, trillions of cells are communicating, repairing damage, fighting potential infections, regulating hormones, balancing fluids, and producing energy. Every second, millions of red blood cells travel through an enormous network of blood vessels delivering oxygen to tissues that need it most. Your immune system is constantly identifying threats, your liver is filtering substances from your blood, and your brain is processing an astonishing amount of information from the environment. What's remarkable is that most of this happens completely outside your awareness. We often think of health as something we actively create, but much of staying alive depends on countless automatic processes working together in extraordinary harmony. The human body isn't simply a collection of organs—it's one of the most complex self-sustaining systems known to exist, performing billions of tasks every day just to keep you functioning. 🩺✨
