🎬🎻 Dmitri Shostakovich – Waltz No. 2, from the Suite for Variety Orchestra
Joelle – piano 🎹
China Hong Kong Youth Symphony Orchestra – Artem Konstantinov
•
In the film it was written for, this waltz plays from a loudspeaker. The film follows volunteers in the Virgin Lands of Kazakhstan, and the loudspeaker detail comes from the Boston Symphony Orchestra's page on the work. In the original score, according to the same text, the melancholy melody begins on an alto saxophone and then passes to the trombones. The variety orchestra of the title, the page says, uses dance-band instruments: four saxophones, plus guitar and accordion. Beneath the melody, double basses and snare drum mark an oom-pah-pah that the page calls ironic, with a circus-like feel. And the page points to a contrast: the theme is light, and the accompaniment around it is dark.
•
Listen again, this time for the tempo: the waltz opens a little slower, with only the beat of the accompaniment, and gradually speeds up over the course of the excerpt. Listen for the last moments too: with no new note, the sound fades away, and that is when Joelle's hands leave the keyboard and stay in the air.
•
The text that comes with the original video says Joelle studies piano with the pianist Shirley Lo, and the recording credits place the concert in the Hong Kong Cultural Centre Concert Hall. In the suite's instrumentation, the piano is already there: two of them, inside the orchestra, according to the work's listing on the Boosey & Hawkes site. In this version, the piano is the soloist. Right at the opening, Joelle's feet, in silver shoes, rest on a black platform in front of the pedals. And in the close-up shots, the polished wood behind the keys reflects Joelle's hands.

Core memory- unlocked 😭
.
.
Truly thinking about this moment could instantly bring me to tears. One of the happiest moments of my life.

When I say my mom is my biggest cheerleader, I mean that this woman has a note on her phone documenting every single day I was gone on survivor, timestamped with what she was praying for me.

One of the biggest gifts of this whole journey was that it wasn’t just my dream… my people dreamed it with me.

So when I got the news…
I WAS PLAYING 51
I didn’t care what it took
I wanted to tell her in person.
.
.
To pull this off I had to lie to her for a week telling her I hadn’t heard back (BRUTAL).

I flew to AZ
turned off my location services
picked up these balloons
and drove to the house as fast as I could.

I had surprised my dad earlier that week (he is also one of my biggest cheerleaders) and he helped me coordinate so that my mom thought HE was going to be at the front door when she opened it-

but really he was in Baltimore 🤣
.
.
Safe to say we absolutely confused and delighted my mom, and this woman deserves every ounce of happiness life can give her 😭

My Favorite Quotes:
💙"Do you ever wonder what is like being normal? Do you suppose it's something we could study well enough to pass at it, at least for a day or two, just to get a taste at what we're missing?"
💙"Be more than the hero who gets mourned in the end."
💙"Has anyone ever told you that your weird? Really weird." "You only see it because you're just the same."
💙"I still find it hard to understand how in this great big world, two very unlikely creatures could find each other. And fit, when it shouldn't make sense, when they've never truly made sense with another..."

Review:

Following up a powerful first book in a series is hard to do, but this book was just as incredible as the first one. We see our favorite characters from the first book as well as many new ones. While I fell in love with Griff and Mal in the first book, I also came to love Liam and Alys just as much in this one. Once again, these characters are sent on a fantastic journey that is chock-full of adventure, magic, and suspense. We have both a MM and sapphic romance in this one and I was here for it!! I inhaled this book because I couldn't put it down, and just as it was getting good, it ended on such a huge cliffhanger that I don't know how I'm going to survive until the next book releases.

❓️QOTD: If you had to go into a haunted city to save your BFF, who/what are you bringing with you? Why are you bringing that?

❗️AOTD: I am bringing my husband and Great Danes. My husband because he is braver than me and my Great Danes because we used to live in a house that was very active with ghosts and paranormal activity. When we got our Great Dane, Charlie, things got quiet. I mean, they almost completely stopped. Even blessing the house did not stop things. I think they did not like my big dog.
