📊 A surgeon who became a billionaire… and now owns the LA Lakers and LA Time.
Patrick Soon-Shiong grew up in apartheid South Africa as the son of Chinese immigrants, before becoming one of the few non-white students in medical school. By 23, he was a practicing surgeon at UCLA, where he later worked on experimental treatments including early cell transplant research.
He eventually pivoted from medicine into biotech, creating breakthrough cancer drug Abraxane and building multiple companies around it. His major exits included APP Pharmaceuticals ($4.6B) and Abraxis BioScience ($2.8B), generating over $9B in total deals.
Today, Soon-Shiong is worth an estimated $10BN, with investments spanning healthcare, AI, and major assets including the Los Angeles Lakers and the LA Times.
