A group of friends spends an entire weekend outside and somehow manages to get the reddest legs anyone has ever seen. By Monday, their calves look like they were professionally painted with tomato soup. Walking around the apartment, they waddle cautiously and complain dramatically about every staircase, chair, and light breeze. Unfortunately, this would already be enough trouble if not for the fact that they have a full-sized basketball hoop installed directly in the middle of their apartment living room.

Nobody remembers why the hoop is there. It blocks access to the couch, partially obstructs the refrigerator, and makes watching television nearly impossible. Yet every time someone suggests removing it, another person insists on taking a jump shot. Soon the apartment becomes a bizarre obstacle course of sunburned people limping around a basketball hoop while carrying groceries and ice packs. One man attempts a layup, bumps into the coffee table, and accidentally banks the ball off a lampshade for the winning basket of absolutely nothing. Despite the chaos, they all agree the apartment has never felt more athletic—or more ridiculous.

Your brain isn’t designed to show you reality exactly as it is. It’s designed to make predictions. You’ve seen thousands of red Coca-Cola cans, so your brain automatically filled in the missing color to save energy.

And this doesn’t just happen with colors. It happens with your entire life. For example, if you expect to fail, you’re more likely to notice every mistake and ignore signs of progress. and so on.

Just like your brain invented the color red, it can invent limitations that aren’t really there. You don’t experience reality exactly as it is. You experience itthrough what you expect it to be.

So start expecting better things, and your brain will start looking for evidence that they’re possible.
