@zeidler.photo We used natural stone all through our home, from the tiles in our bathrooms and laundry to our kitchen and laundry bench tops. If you swipe you can read our tips for selecting natural stones for your home 🫶🏼 also pasted below.
SPEAKING OF STONE...
A mixture of natural stones was chosen based on form and function for each space. Alana shares what they learnt in the process.
PLANNING
“It’s worth finalising your kitchen layout before selecting your slabs,” advises Alana. “That way, you can choose pieces that minimise joins and create a more seamless finish.”
BENCHTOPS
Alana suggests granite or quartzite for high-use surfaces. The ‘Mont Blanc’ quartzite they used for their laundry and kitchen benchtops was chosen for its practicality. “It looks similar to marble but is much more durable and less porous.” In their pantry, they opted for recycled timber benchtops. “That’s where all our appliances live, like the coffee machine, kettle and toaster, so it made sense to use a material that wouldn’t be at risk of staining.”
WET AREAS
Elegant ‘Carrara’ marble was chosen for the bathrooms, and in the powder room it was paired with ‘Nero Marquina’ black marble in a dramatic checkerboard layout. In the laundry, silver travertine in a French pattern introduces texture and softness underfoot.
SPLASHBACKS
The pair have learnt that even the slim piece of natural stone behind their cooktop absorbs oils over time regardless of how carefully they cook. By contrast, the fibre cement sheeting used for the rest of the splashback is “waterproof, easy to clean and can be repainted, while still giving a really traditional look”.
OFFCUTS
If you ask your stonemason to keep your offcuts, you can use them elsewhere. “We were surprised at how much was left over, and it’s perfect for future pieces like furniture or smaller projects.”
AGEING
Remember that natural stone will soften and gather marks over time. “You have to be open to it ageing” observes Alana. “That’s part of its beauty and what gives it character.”
