😎 If you’re a woman, you’ve probably heard the phrase, “She’s let herself go.” It’s usually said about someone who’s gained weight, stopped coloring her hair, developed wrinkles, or is no longer interested in meeting society’s standards of beauty.

🌻 “Letting yourself go” is always a judgement. A warning. A reminder to us all that we’re expected to spend a lifetime maintaining, improving, disguising, shrinking, plucking, lifting, smoothing, and monitoring ourselves.

🌺 Here’s a thought: What if we’ve misunderstood the phrase entirely? What if “letting yourself go” isn’t a failure but a liberation? Not about “letting yourself go.” Just “letting go.”

🌹 Letting go of the exhausting need to look younger than you are. Letting go of the pressure to remain attractive to everyone but yourself. Letting go of the endless comparison with younger, thinner, richer, and airbrushed women. Letting go of the belief that your value is tied to your appearance and your body exists to be evaluated by other people.

🥰 What if “letting yourself go” actually means you’ve decided there’s more important things to do with your life than worrying about whether your stomach is flat, your neck is wrinkled, or your hair is grey.

🦋 The freedom of being yourself is far more rewarding than the approval of strangers. So the next time you hear, “You’ve let yourself go,” smile and say, “Thank you.” Because what’s being noticed is that you’ve let go of the version of yourself that existed to please everyone else. And in that letting go, you’re becoming your true, authentic self
