Every artist reaches a point where they need dedicated time to focus on the details. At Mâwacihitowinihk Nikamowak: Indigenous Music Residency, Indigenous musicians come together for three weeks of creation, collaboration, and performance. Designed for artists with songs already in development, the residency supports participants as they refine their work through workshops, mentorship, recording sessions, and live presentation opportunities. Through faculty-led sessions, one-on-one mentorship, studio recording opportunities, and dedicated creative space, participants will strengthen their craft while exploring new approaches to performance and production. After previously spending time at Banff Centre as a participant, @logan_staats returns as faculty. The award-winning artist from Six Nations of the Grand River is known for his compelling songwriting and dynamic live performances. Good day! I have two more chances coming up to dance with me in Toronto. I'll be some of my favourite topics; Sunday June 14th Musicality & Improvisation Sunday July 26th Drum Solos. Both workshops are from 11am to 2:30pm at Gotta Dance Studio, 3581 Dundas Street West, Toronto. Cost is $85 per workshop or both for $160. In Musicality and Improvisation we are going to be working through some exercises, activities and concepts about how we translate what we hear and feel into movements, and ways to become more comfortable with Improvisation or feel more in control of your Improvisation. I have always been a dancer that relies heavily on Improvisation. I love having the ability to adapt an interpretation to a specific audience or space if needed and I feel much more at ease without a Choreography in place lol. I mean it's hard to get upset about what you did or didn't do if you didn't have a plan in the first place lol 🤷 🤣😂 Developing and understanding your musicality and applying it to improvisation will help you to grow as a dancer. Dancing to shik shak shok for the 10,000 time and I never get board of it because it's always fun to just be present and see how I respond to it one day versus another. If you check out my YouTube you can see several videos dancing to shik shak shok over the years and the variation of how I interpret it. Also if you check out my old videos on YouTube, some if which where I am like 30 pounds less, maybe more, you will also see that YOUR BODY AESTHETIC IS NOT THE REASON YOU CAN OR CAN'T DO SOMETHING! And before anyone says anything, I got body shamed and told to lose weight then at that size too which looking back is INSANE lol.
