U.S. Marine LCpl Cody Elliot, with 1st Battalion, 5th Marines, holds the dog tags of LCpl Joshua B. McDaniels, a combat engineer killed during their seven-month deployment to Sangin, Afghanistan, in 2011. 1/5, along with LCpl Elliot, previously deployed to the Nawa-I-Barakzayi District of Helmand Province from May–December 2009. After 14 months back home, the battalion returned to Afghanistan, this time deploying to Sangin from March–October 2011 and relieving 3/5, another unit remembered for some of the hardest fighting and highest casualty rates of the entire war. That same intensity carried into 1/5’s deployment. By 2011, Sangin had become infamous among British and American forces. It was a major Taliban stronghold, strategically important for insurgent movement routes, opium production, and its location along the Helmand River valley. The area was filled with IEDs, canal systems, mud compounds, and dense green-zone vegetation that made ambushes common. Many who served there described Sangin as a place where even movement itself was dangerous. Patrols could take hours to move only a few hundred meters as engineers and infantry searched continuously for IEDs. Most casualties came not during major firefights, but from hidden IEDs encountered on routine patrols. On June 12, LCpl Elliot and his platoon were moving to support sister platoons in heavy contact. After traveling only a few hundred meters outside the wire, combat engineer LCpl McDaniels triggered an IED and was mortally wounded. After seeing the explosion, LCpl Elliot moved to reach McDaniels and render first aid. Seconds later, he triggered a secondary IED, losing a leg, a finger, and suffering severe facial injuries. Both Marines were 21 yrs old. McDaniels was among 17 Marines killed in Sangin with 1/5 and its attached units during the deployment. More than 160 members of the battalion’s force of roughly 1,000 Marines and sailors earned Purple Hearts for combat wounds. On June 13, 2022 (slide 7), Elliot returned to Pendleton with other vets and family of 1/5 who fought in Sangin, to hike up First Sgts Hill to lay mementos at crosses honoring members of their unit who died in combat.
