Following a loss to Penta in his WWE debut match h on the January 13, 2025 episode of Raw, Chad Gable began a storyline centered around lucha libre. Over the following months, Gable embarked on a self proclaimed journey to learn the traditions of Mexican wrestling, eventually debuting under the masked persona of El Grande Americano. The character repeatedly denied being Chad Gable despite obvious similarities, creating one of WWE’s most unique and controversial gimmicks of the year. On June 7, Americano challenged El Hijo del Vikingo for the AAA Mega Championship at Worlds Collide but lost. Later that same night, he competed in the Men’s Money in the Bank Ladder Match. Shortly afterward, Chad Gable suffered a legitimate shoulder injury, forcing him off television. With Gable sidelined, Ludwig Kaiser assumed the role of El Grande Americano. Beginning in July 2025, Kaiser continued portraying El Grande Americano in AAA, including a challenge for the AAA Mega Championship at Triplemanía XXXIII. While maintaining his villainous personality in the United States, Americano gradually became a fan favorite in Mexico. His ability to embrace the culture, connect with audiences, and speak fluent Spanish earned widespread praise from AAA fans. During this period, Pete Dunne and Tyler Bate joined him as Rayo Americano and Bravo Americano, forming the trio known as Los Americanos. At the 2026 Royal Rumble, Gable returned as “The Original” Grande Americano and started a feud with Ludwig’s Americano. After months of build up including OG disrespecting not only Grande himself, but his girlfriend, Andrea Bazarte and the AAA fanbase, the endgame came when a Máscara contra Máscara match was officially announced for Noche de Los Grandes. El Grande Americano defeated “The Original” El Grande Americano in the highly, critically acclaimed Lucha de Apuestas match. Chad Gable honored the stipulation and removed his mask.
