A man develops such an intense obsession with gummy bears that he becomes convinced the greatest aroma in human history is the smell of a freshly opened bag. One day he hears a ridiculous rumor that somewhere near the top of the Eiffel Tower there is a single gummy bear with a scent so magnificent it can only be appreciated at great altitude. Without asking any questions whatsoever, he books a flight, arrives in Paris, and volunteers to help clean the entire tower just for a chance to get close enough to smell it.
Armed with buckets, rags, and the determination of a man who has made several questionable life choices, he spends months polishing railings and scrubbing platforms while constantly asking, “Has anyone seen the legendary gummy bear?” Most people assume he’s joking. Then, halfway through his quest, he meets a cheerful window washer who spends her days dangling hundreds of feet above the city. Instead of searching for gummy bears, he suddenly finds himself inventing excuses to help wash windows, discuss cleaning techniques, and admire sunsets over Paris. Before long, he completely forgets about the mythical candy.
Years later, someone finally presents him with a gummy bear and says, “Wasn’t this the whole reason you came here?” He stares at it, then looks over at the window washer, now the love of his life, and laughs. “You know,” he says, “I came all this way hoping to smell a gummy bear and accidentally found happiness instead.” The gummy bear promptly falls out of his hand and disappears into a tourist’s souvenir bag below. To this day, nobody knows whether it was the legendary gummy bear or not—but everyone agrees it was the most romantic cleaning project in history.
