In honour of National Indigenous History Month, we’re looking back at a photo from 1996, when Banff Centre celebrated the official opening of its Indigenous Arts department.
This image was taken to promote the establishment of the Chinook Winds Aboriginal Dance Program, which supported the professional development of a national Indigenous dance community. The program brought together established and emerging choreographers and dancers for intensive training, rehearsals, and performances, fostering the creation of new works while honouring significant existing pieces through a new generation of Indigenous artists.
Over the past 30 years, Indigenous Arts and Indigenous Leadership programming have continued to grow, supporting hundreds of Indigenous participants each year as they develop their artistic, cultural, and leadership practices. We are honoured to be part of that ongoing journey and excited for what the future holds.
