Cory Kennedy’s Story - pioneering internet stardom

Before the world knew the internet could make someone an online celeb, Cory Kennedy became one of the first internet stars, almost by accident.

From Santa Monica, her rise to fame began in 2005 at a Blood Brothers concert in LA, randomly crossing paths with up-&-coming Mark Hunter, now famously known as The Cobrasnake, whose party pics documented the city’s culture.

Cory was just 15, but after getting her first photo taken at that concert, she began interning for Mark, accompanying him to happenings within the scene where she was photographed.

People became fascinated instantly. Her effortlessly messy hair, thrifted, look- often described as “the little match-girl” - made Kennedy stand out amongst others.

What started as a few photos posted online became a phenomenon. The images spread across MySpace, Tumblr, & early downtown blogs, making Kennedy the defining face of (now named) Indie Sleaze. She quickly amassed thousands of friends on MySpace, bloggers analyzed her outfits & young people aimed at copying her look

By 2007, Vice had dubbed her “the first internet It-Girl,“ while New York Magazine crowned her the “New York It Girl”. Brands featured her in campaigns, designers like Jeremy Scott wanted her wearing their clothes, & club promoters paid her to simply show up.

What made her story both remarkable yet concerning was its pace. Within a year, a teenager was the star partying with Paris Hilton, Lindsay Lohan, Kanye West, & Katy Perry. Like many young it-girls before her, it wasn’t all glamour. She was exposed to an adult scene at a very young age, something many justifiably feel shouldn’t have been normalized throughout previous decades of youth culture.

Kennedy had the added pressure of navigating social media when it was in its infancy, starting a new kind of fame, treading new territory not through the traditional media gatekeepers, but via blogs, & virality without algorithmic dependency

Looking back, Cory’s rise remains one of the internet’s earliest - fashion, culture, & the web colliding to transform a music & fashion-obsessed teen into a global icon whose influence can still be felt.
