For generations of Waterford people, Noel Sinnott was synonymous with music in the city. Long before streaming, downloads and online shopping, a visit to Sinnott's was often the first stop for anyone looking for a new record, a concert ticket, or simply some advice on what to listen to next.

A passionate jazz enthusiast, Noel began selling records from his mother's grocery shop at Johnstown before opening Sinnott's Records in 1959. What started as a small sideline grew into one of Waterford's best-known independent businesses. Over the following decades, he built a reputation for his knowledge of music and his ability to track down records that others could not find. For many customers, a conversation with Noel was as much a part of the experience as the purchase itself.

His influence extended beyond the record counter. During the showband era, Noel managed and promoted several local groups, including The Savoy, The Decca and The Footappers, helping to support a thriving local music scene. As formats changed from vinyl to cassette and CD, Sinnott's adapted with the times, but Noel's enthusiasm for music never diminished.

Customers remember the familiar sight of Noel behind the counter, often with a cigar in hand, sharing recommendations and stories. Noel Sinnott passed away in 2023, but his contribution to Waterford's musical life is still remembered by the generations of people who passed through the doors of Sinnott's. For many, it was more than a record shop. It was part of growing up in Waterford.
Captured in the doorway of Sinnott's on John Street, Noel Sinnott cuts a familiar figure to generations of Waterford customers.

The Waterford Blend Project combines historic photographs with present-day images taken from the same location, bringing different eras of the city together in a single frame. By carefully aligning old and new views, the project highlights how Waterford has changed over time while preserving a visual connection to the people, businesses and streets that shaped its history. Each image aims to tell a story, encouraging viewers to look beyond the buildings themselves and reflect on the memories, everyday lives and local characters that once filled these spaces.

🎵 Top of the Pops (1980s)

📍 30 John Street, Waterford

🎶 Sinnott’s Records (1959–2003)

💿 If you grew up in Waterford, you’ll probably remember Sinnott’s. Records, cassettes, CDs, concert tickets and the video collection upstairs drew generations of customers through the door, making it one of the city’s best-known music shops for more than four decades.

🎺 Noel Sinnott opened the shop in 1959. A jazz enthusiast with a deep knowledge of music, he first sold records from his mother’s grocery shop at Johnstown before demand led to a business of its own. Over the following decades, Sinnott’s became a familiar name in Waterford, known for its selection of music and Noel’s ability to track down records that seemed impossible to find.

🎙During the showband era, Noel also managed several local groups, including The Savoy, The Decca and The Footappers from this John Street headquarters. Customers remember him behind the counter, often with a cigar in hand, helping people find exactly what they were looking for. The modern photograph was taken in August 2023, when much of this stretch of the street was boarded up. The area may look somewhat different today.
