👧👦 Siblings (1922) 📍 58 Johnstown, Waterford Poignant image of siblings standing in their doorway, Johnstown, Waterford, 1922 and now. This is Stop 29 in The Waterford Blend Book and the first location in Stage 5, a walk that leads from Johnstown to Ballybricken. Taken on 22 November 1922, the historical photograph shows a street that looks way more worn than it does today. While the atmosphere has changed completely, many of the buildings are still here. These images, along with many more, are featured in The Waterford Blend Book, which follows a walkable route through Waterford City, combining historic photographs with present-day views of the same locations. 🔎What's inside the book: • More than 200 pages 📖 • 6 stages covering distinct areas of the city • 40 stops • Easy to follow route • Extensive collection of late 19th and early 20th century Waterford images • Current photos • Blends pairing then & now • Detailed mapping • Insightful background detail 👉🏻The essential book for nostalgic souls, photography lovers, history enthusiasts, and, of course, anyone with a connection to Waterford or interest in how the city has evolved over time. • Available on Amazon. Viking Ground (1900) 📍 Reginald’s Tower, The Quay, Waterford • Reginald's Tower is a circular stone fortification at the eastern end of Waterford’s Viking Triangle. It dates back to the early 13th century but is built on the site of a 10th century Viking stronghold, named after Ragnall, a Norse king of Waterford. Over the centuries it has served as a royal castle, a mint, a prison, and now a museum. • Since 1900 the quay, surrounding streets, and almost every other building nearby have changed dramatically, but not Reginald's Tower. 📖 Although this particular image is not included, many more blends like this can be found in The Waterford Blend Book, which follows a walkable route through the city. 🎵 Top of the Pops (1980s) 📍 30 John Street, Waterford 🎶 Sinnott’s Records (1959–2003) 💿 If you grew up in Waterford, you’ll probably remember Sinnott’s. Records, cassettes, CDs, concert tickets and the video collection upstairs drew generations of customers through the door, making it one of the city’s best-known music shops for more than four decades. 🎺 Noel Sinnott opened the shop in 1959. A jazz enthusiast with a deep knowledge of music, he first sold records from his mother’s grocery shop at Johnstown before demand led to a business of its own. Over the following decades, Sinnott’s became a familiar name in Waterford, known for its selection of music and Noel’s ability to track down records that seemed impossible to find. 🎙During the showband era, Noel also managed several local groups, including The Savoy, The Decca and The Footappers from this John Street headquarters. Customers remember him behind the counter, often with a cigar in hand, helping people find exactly what they were looking for. The modern photograph was taken in August 2023, when much of this stretch of the street was boarded up. The area may look somewhat different today. • Although this specific image is not featured, there are many more blends like this in The Waterford Blend Book, which follows a walkable route through the city, 🔎What's inside the book: • More than 200 pages 📖 • 6 stages covering distinct areas of the city • 40 stops • Easy to follow route • Extensive collection of late 19th and early 20th century Waterford images • Current photos • Blends pairing then & now • Detailed mapping • Insightful background detail 👉🏻The essential book for nostalgic souls, photography lovers, history enthusiasts, and, of course, anyone with a connection to Waterford or interest in how the city has evolved over time. • Available on Amazon. 👒 Hats Off (1908) 📍 122 Parade Quay, Waterford, Ireland Stop Number 5 on the Waterford Blend Route brings us to a former millinery shop on the Quay. Mrs. O'Mahony commissioned Arthur Henri to photograph the "Bijou" millinery shop and he captured a lot more than just the shop front. The boy trimming hats in the window above, the hats on their stands in the window, the lace curtains to provide suitable privacy for those who would wish to try them on, the "Vote for Mackesy" graffiti on the wall, and the photographer's reflections in the glass. Walk past today and all of those same architectural details are still there, well over a century on. 📖 These images and many more can be found in the Waterford Blend Book, which follows a walkable route through the city.
