The Ode to Billie Joe by Bobbie Gentry was one of those songs that I loved as a young person. It was about secrets and love and lust and loss and sadness and the quotidian aspects of life, just real life. It was also my father's birthday. Today there's a little bit of solace knowing that in whatever realm you end up in that he has two of his children with him, my late brother Nicholas and now my sister Kelly. She was his first born and that is a most special relationship.. missing them both today.

my stomach has been knots since hearing the news about the influencer couple who decided to end their pregnancy because of Down Syndrome.

I remember walking into our doctors office when I was pregnant with my now 14 month old son like it was just yesterday…

we had a history of loss and miscarriages on our medical charts. due to that, every ultrasound felt weighty. my chest would get tight and all I need to do was declare the Word of God over my baby. because I knew that, though I was a vessel and would be bringing this baby into the world… this child belonged to God.

as we sat in that room, excited to see our baby on that ultrasound… we heard “would you like to do genetic testing?” I looked at my husband, he squeezed my hand, and without hesitation said “genetic test results are not going to change our mind about this little miracle of ours and this child’s future.” an extra chromosome, had that been the case, would not have made us see our son any differently.

we live in a world that has normalized taking life, the most innocent of them, for the convenience of parents. it’s normalized that if a child doesn’t fit their timeline, plans, or their idea of what “family life should look like” to just erase it all together.

every life matters to God, and every child is made in His perfect image — extra chromosome or not. worth is not determined by a diagnosis, genetic test, or “how difficult” their journey might be. their worth was established the moment God knit them together in their mother’s womb. my heart breaks for that baby and for a culture that increasingly views children as something to be selected, customized, or disregarded at the first sign of inconvenience. Lord Jesus, this world needs You. #mom #baby
