My technicolor awakening.. 🏳️‍🌈 Every theatre kid has a JOSEPH story.. and same. Found this sheet music left behind at Ripley this week, couldn’t resist croaking/plunking about, and realized… it’s been [insanely] 30 years since my time ended w the revival tour as a kiddo in 1996. How bout that for a random fact. A crazy beautiful moment in my childhood- a wildly joyful, enormous spectacle of a production, with the universally beloved @donnyosmond at the center. But also a very talented, and very gorgeous cast from NY.. dear reader, they were hot. I mean, *12* brothers from many backgrounds in the show (+ covers etc)… The child wranglers [appropriately] kept us very separate, but I couldn’t help observing from a distance.. the palpable brotherhood of those performers, the love, and the several many out liberated actors among them. It was truly my little gay awakening (oh hello first crush /Joseph understudy @vance_avery!) Also, being the mid-90s, I’m thinking of what it was even like then to be out— what those young gay men might have been going through. The uncertainty, the pressure, the fear.. without the support of our modern legal and medical advances. But their confidence and visibility may have just saved me. I’m also considering why I so connected with this show, and still carry such a soft spot.. But then really, it’s a show about an outsider, a dreamer with a rainbow technicolor coat, shunned and abandoned by his family— and even at the depths of despair [cue song in carousel], he sets off to make his own place in the world and help others prosper. Not a whisper of a romantic plot. 🌈 And with that, I couldn’t resist posting this throwback love of a very rainbow and very happy time long ago, especially during #pridemonth. 🫶 @donnyosmond @andrewlloydwebber @lwentertainment #joseph #🏳️‍🌈#josephandtheamazingtechnicolordreamcoat
