What We Carry | Vault 1867
“The ocean was angry that morning…and honest.
Forty-foot seas rolling beneath us like moving hills. Wind screaming through the rigging. Saltwater finding every inch of exposed skin. The kind of weather that makes you understand how small you really are.
I remember standing on that deck with both hands wrapped around cold steel, watching the bow disappear into another wall of water.
And for a moment, I wasn’t thinking about the storm.
I was thinking about everything else…
The people I’d lost. The chances I never took. The years that seemed to vanish faster than I thought they would.
When life gets rough enough, all the things we spend our days worrying about suddenly fall away.
What’s left is usually the truth we’ve been avoiding.
And out there, the ocean doesn’t care who you were yesterday. It doesn’t care about your job title…or anything else.
It only cares whether you’ll keep your footing when the deck drops out beneath you.
I’ve come to believe life isn’t much different.
Most people are waiting for calm water before they start living.
Waiting until they’re more prepared. And waiting until the timing feels right.
Waiting for certainty.
Certainty never comes.
Not out there. Not in here.
Standing there in the spray, I realized something - The storms aren’t interruptions to life.
They are life.
And we’re all fighting some kind of weather.
Some are missing someone. Some are starting over. Some are carrying a burden they’ve never spoken aloud.
Some are barely holding on.
As another wave broke across the deck, I looked out into the gray horizon and thought about how little of life we actually control.
The sea decides what the sea decides.
People leave. Years pass. Plans change.
But there are still things we get to choose…
We choose whether we become bitter or grateful.
Whether we keep sailing.
The horizon was still hidden when my watch ended.
The storm hadn’t passed, and the uncertainty hadn’t disappeared.
But somehow, neither had I.
And that felt like its own kind of victory…
The kind most of us are fighting for every single day.”
