A stranger on a Delhi bus secretly photographed me. I didn't know it at the time, but according to my friend, there was a man who kept changing seats whenever we moved. At first we thought it was coincidence. Later, it became obvious he was trying to stay close enough to keep looking. A few hours later, my phone lit up. The first thing he sent wasn't a greeting. It was a collection of photographs. These photographs. And then came the message: "Kya armpit show tha sab ke samne. Bohot brave hai. Mai wohi chaatna chahta tha. Tu Karol Bagh ke side utar gayi thi. Waha kya kar rahi thi apne photographer dost ke saath? Tera photographer gay lag raha tha." What fascinated me wasn't the rudeness. It was the amount of attention he had paid. He remembered where I got off. He remembered who I was with. He remembered how many times I raised my arm to hold the rail. He remembered details that I wasn't even conscious of during the journey. According to him, the entire bus was looking at me. He told me my body was perfect. He told me I stood out. He kept returning to the same subject over and over again, convinced that everyone else was noticing exactly what he was noticing. A raised arm became a spectacle. A crowded summer bus became a stage. Ordinary sweat became something he couldn't stop talking about. The more he spoke, the more I realized something: The story wasn't really about me. It was about him. His attention. His imagination. His assumptions. His certainty that the whole world was sharing his point of view. I thanked him for the photographs. I acknowledged the compliment. After all, admiration is easy to recognize. But what stayed with me wasn't the praise. It was the fact that a stranger spent an entire journey watching me closely enough to build a complete story in his head. Meanwhile, I was just taking a bus ride.
