Every family seems to have one person who proudly says, “We’re not getting a cat.” Most of the time, it’s Dad. He insists the cat isn’t allowed on the furniture, says he doesn’t want the responsibility, and claims he’ll have nothing to do with it. Everyone hears the speech… but somehow, the cat ends up coming home anyway. Fast forward a few months, and Dad is the cat’s favorite human. He’s the one secretly buying the expensive treats, building little cardboard forts, and making sure the food bowl is never empty. If anyone asks, he’ll still say, “It’s not my cat,” even as the cat is curled up asleep on his lap. The funniest part is watching the rules slowly disappear. “The cat isn’t sleeping in my bed,” turns into, “Don’t wake him up—he’s comfortable.” “No people food,” becomes tiny bites of chicken magically appearing under the table. Before long, Dad is taking pictures of the cat, talking to it like an old friend, and worrying if it’s been asleep for too long. Everyone knows how the story ends. The dad who didn’t want a cat becomes the person most obsessed with it. He’ll deny it every chance he gets, but his camera roll is full of cat photos, he knows exactly what every meow means, and he somehow becomes the first person the cat looks for every morning. I will remember this generation as the one that taught me the most about courage. What’s happening right now is people remembering that they have agency, power and all the damn right in the world to question a broken education system. Systems are made to serve us, a huge percentage of whom are our students, who have felt wildly dissatisfied for good reason and for a while. It’s time they were heard and why wouldn’t we, why shouldn’t we? This country and the future of its kids are not mutually exclusive. Movements don’t have to be perfect. They have to mobilise so that people who are grieving can be brought justice. This grief cuts across generations: the parents who worry about whether their kids are going to be alright, and the kids who have suffered enough to come out in the numbers that they have. Yeh kitna clear hai. You are wasting time arguing the specifics. Look at the bigger picture. Speak for the students or at least pass the mic. They are angry and they want a resolution. Simple. Also, can we take a moment to appreciate how they are leading this movement! Kya talented desh hai humara yaar - the art, the music, the writing and THE MEMES.
