Collagen is TRASH for building muscle 🤣 The fact that companies are promoting collagen as a muscle builder is hilarious! Collagen may have some other benefits (very debatable IMO) but building muscle is NOT one of them I discuss this topic as well as all things protein in my latest podcast, a full episode of a deep dive on protein (link in bio) First of all, collagen has quite possibly the WORST amino acid profile for muscle. It is absurdly low in leucine (1-3%). No other protein source is even close to that low. Even crappy plant proteins like wheat are well over double the leucine content of collagen. I am aware of NO studies that demonstrate an increase in muscle protein synthesis in response to collagen ingestion even at high doses Further, the essential amino acid content of collagen is 15-20% which is HORRIFIC. For comparison, the EAA content of whey protein is ~45-50% again making it horrible for building muscle While some of said they use collagen for connective tissue, I am skeptical of this as well. It’s not like you take in collagen & it just inserts itself into your connective tissue. It is broken down into its constitutive amino acids during digestion. Further, collagen does NOT stimulate connective tissue synthesis more than whey protein or placebo as demonstrated in multiple studies (PMIDs: 37202878 & 39086044) Companies also charge you a lot more for collagen vs whey since collagen is the flavor of the month protein supplement As someone who competed at the highest levels of drug free powerlifting and bodybuilding and did my PhD in protein metabolism… collagen would be my last choice for a protein source Hit the link in my bio to check out the full episode #collagen #laynenorton #protein
