Ten Years.
One Dress.

For four years, the public has been told Marilyn Monroe’s “Happy Birthday, Mr. President” dress was undamaged by being worn at the Met Gala in 2022.

Facts age better than headlines. Photographs age better than opinions.

The three images in this reel were taken over a ten year period and document the condition of Marilyn Monroe’s iconic “Happy Birthday, Mr. President” dress.

The first photograph was taken at Julien’s Auctions in November 2016, before the gown was sold to Ripley’s.

The second photograph was taken on June 1, 2022, shortly after the dress was worn at the Met Gala.

The third photograph was taken on June 7, 2026, at Ripley’s Grand Prairie, where the dress is currently on display. Image 3 shows the back of the dress reflected in the glass of the display case.

What is particularly striking in the most recent image is the condition of the rear fabric. The separation visible today was not apparent in the 2016 photograph and was not visible to this extent in the images I released in 2022.

Notably, panels have now been added to the sides of the display case, obscuring direct views of the rear of the garment from many angles. As a result, documenting the current condition of the back of the dress has become more challenging than in previous years.

Taken together, these photographs provide a visual timeline of one of the most famous garments in American history.

When I first released comparison photographs in 2022, the discussion centered on missing crystals, stressed fabric, and visible changes to the garment. Some accepted the evidence. Others disputed it.

Four years later, the dress continues to tell its own story.

Marilyn Monroe performed in this dress for only a few minutes on May 19, 1962. More than sixty years later, it remains one of the most recognizable garments of the twentieth century.

The photographs speak for themselves.

Some objects are simply too important to risk.

The damage is clear.

And I ask again:

Was it worth it?
