After years in classrooms and a decade homeschooling four daughters, here are the seven categories I make sure show up across our weeks.

Not every day. Not all at once. Just present, in rotation, across the rhythm of our home.

✦ Expressive — singing, dancing, art, writing, crafting. The voice for feelings that do not have words yet.

✦ Imaginative — small worlds and make-believe. The first practice ground for empathy and abstract thinking.

✦ Sensory — water, sand, slime, playdough, treasure baskets. How the nervous system maps the textures of the world.

✦ Physical — climbing, chasing, balancing, swinging, risk-taking play. Where body and brain co-develop and where confidence is built.

✦ Socio-dramatic — dressing up, role play, acting out experiences. How children process what they have witnessed, big and small.

✦ Constructive — blocks, loose parts, STEM activities. The physical foundation of maths and engineering long before any worksheet arrives.

✦ Cooperative — Simon Says, Peekaboo, team sports. Where rules, fairness, turn-taking, and friendship are practised in real time.

You do not need to plan all seven into a week to be a great parent.
