misty baker-day and i held hands everywhere we went. i’d joke that if i didn’t hold onto her, i’d lose her. she’d say that was rude, let go of my hand and next thing you know she’d be 7 aisles away in a walmart riding a children’s bicycle and giggling until we got kicked out. misty never met a day she didn’t like. she had a childlike wonder from the day i met her (well, i suppose we were children, 11 and 12) though she always felt years older than me, more experienced, more wise, while still floating through life unscathed and unbothered with her big blue eyes and perfectly pink cheeks. she could wear every color in the rainbow at once and make it look chic. she’d do a cartwheel in the middle of the street with no warning and keep walking. she never wore shoes, and her nail polish was always chipped, and she could make a guitar materialize anywhere. misty played a lot of games, but she was serious when it came to me. she gave me my first lipstick, my first thong, and my first beer. when jeremy died, she made sure she was the one to call me because she knew i’d want to hear it from her. at his memorial, she held my hand all night. misty didn’t believe in closed doors. she’d barge in while you were sleeping, or in the shower, or changing your clothes. when my family became homeless in the 7th grade, i stayed over for a week and she shared her bed, pajamas, and every meal with me. in my mind, this was what a big sister was. so it was settled. misty would be my big sister, and i would be her little sister, and the door would always be open. on october 21st, at 12:12pm pst, misty took her last breath peacefully in my arms, listening to “don’t stop believin,” just us two—on a beautiful san francisco Misty Day. to know misty was to love misty, but to be loved by misty was the greatest honor. it was an honor. rest in eternal peace with your truest love. i know he couldn’t wait to see you.
