I spend a lot of time calling out “biohacking” BS, but sauna is one of the few things in that space where the evidence is actually pretty interesting. In a cohort of 2,315 Finnish men followed for more than 20 years, more frequent sauna use was associated with lower cardiovascular and all-cause mortality (PMID: 25705824). Important: that’s observational data, so it does NOT prove sauna itself caused people to live longer. We also have randomized data. In an 8-week trial, adding 15 minutes of post-exercise sauna to exercise produced greater improvements in systolic blood pressure, cardiorespiratory fitness, and total cholesterol versus exercise alone in adults with cardiovascular risk factors (PMID: 35785965). For recovery, a small crossover trial found 20 minutes of infrared sauna after resistance training reduced soreness and attenuated the drop in explosive performance the next day (PMID: 37398966). But the overall recovery literature is still mixed, so I wouldn’t call sauna a magic recovery tool. Bottom line: sauna isn’t magic, but unlike a lot of “biohacks,” there’s enough legitimate evidence for me to take it seriously — and I’ve really enjoyed having the Luminar 2 from @sunhomesaunas as part of my recovery program. #SunHomePartner
