That is so true. The Obama Presidential Center is about all of us, about how, together, we shared the hope of making our nation a better place for everyone. For me, walking through the center brought back wonderful memories of volunteering in both Obama campaigns. But my service did not end after President Barack Obama was elected. Through the White House Office of Public Engagement, I had the privilege of helping inform the public about the Affordable Care Act and the 2012 National Mortgage Settlement. We worked as a team, united by a commitment to serving others. I was also deeply honored to have an artifact I donated included in the exhibit. As I walked toward the glass enclosure displaying it, I felt a wave of emotion. The different emotions were powerful and deeply felt. It was beautiful to remember a time when respect for one another mattered, when we could have conversations with people who disagreed with us without insulting or demeaning each other. Walking through the center reminded me that what we are experiencing in our country today is not normal. Remembering what was possible and what we achieved together filled me with pride and gratitude, but it also brought a sadness that hurts. A sadness for what has been lost, and a longing for the sense of common purpose, decency, and hope that so many of us believed in and worked for. Yet seeing that artifact there also reminded me that those values, and the people who carried them forward, are still part of our story.
