The metre changes. The music keeps moving.

Igor Stravinsky - The Rite of Spring
Sacrificial Dance (Danse sacrale) | Timpani
Performed by Lise Duarte Nuñez.

Listen beyond the individual attacks: can you follow the rhythmic thread through the changing groups and the silences?

In this music, memorising the time signatures is only part of the work. Each group has a duration, each attack has a place, and the rests still belong to the phrase. A new barline is not a reset button.

A PRACTICE IDEA
Choose a short passage containing a metre change. Speak the rhythm before playing, including the rests. Identify the reference note value and follow the written tempo relationships: a new time signature does not automatically mean a new speed.

Then play the passage on the timpani, beginning before the change and continuing beyond it. Record one take and listen for the connection between groups, not only the accuracy of isolated notes.

I explore this approach in my article "Sacrificial Dance Timpani: Practising Meter Changes", in the Journal on liseduartenunez.com.

Save this for your next timpani session. What helps you stay oriented through changing metres: counting, hearing the groups or following orchestral cues?
