Confession: I didn’t rest in it. I sprawled out on the couch with the dogs, laptop on my knees, and filled every open hour with more work, because I could. Then one night at the end of summer, lying across the bed from Drew, I tossed out a question like it was nothing. His answer caught me so off guard that it changed our whole year. The other morning it was 9:30, the girls were still in their pajamas, there were pancakes going, and my four-year-old said, We don’t have to rush out the door anymore. I wrote the whole story down, the heart of it and the hard parts I don’t usually post about. (Head lice made the pros list. A class hamster named Pickles made the cons.)
