Lebanese chef Husen Fayad has lost three major properties to Israeli strikes in southern Lebanon: his family restaurant, a new tourism project and a 10,000-square-metre agricultural orchard.

The attacks have destroyed not only valuable investments but also sources of livelihood built through years of dedication and hard work.

His losses reflect the wider destruction inflicted on civilian businesses, agricultural land and livelihoods across southern Lebanon, leaving families to face the devastating consequences of losing what they spent years building.

The irony is hard to miss. Some of these self-proclaimed progressive voices have no hesitation in mocking Diwali, Karva Chauth, Chhath Puja and Dussehra in the name of modernity, yet enthusiastically celebrate Halloween without even understanding its cultural and historical significance.

You don’t have to follow every Indian tradition, but constantly belittling your own culture while glorifying foreign trends raises a genuine question: is this progressiveness or selective cultural acceptance?
