#HipHopHistory - On October 12, 1999, Mos Def (aka Yasiin Bey) released his groundbreaking debut solo album, Black on Both Sides, through Rawkus and Priority Records.

Blending soulful live instrumentation, sharp lyricism, and thought-provoking social commentary, the album became an instant hip-hop classic. Featuring timeless tracks like “Ms. Fat Booty,” “Mathematics,” and “Umi Says,” Mos Def showcased his versatility while addressing everything from love and identity to politics and social injustice.

The critically acclaimed project reached No. 1 on Billboard’s Top Rap Albums chart and peaked at No. 25 on the Billboard 200. It was certified Gold by the RIAA on February 2, 2000, surpassing 500,000 units sold.

More than two decades later, Black on Both Sides remains one of hip-hop’s most respected debut albums, cementing Mos Def’s legacy as one of the genre’s most gifted lyricists.

Not gon lie: I’ve just always thought PAM was a big goofy. When I was in Jersey, I remember who he was trying to run behind to get put on and, when that didn’t happen, he made a pivot. And, to be honest, I didn’t think much of it.

But I underestimated how desperately the Right needed a Black face because, even at the dawn of this deconstruction movement a decade+ ago, they knew white faces would never be able to be at the forefront again and be seen as authoritative. Look at the most vocal evangelical and conservative white men speaking now; they all look/sound unhinged. And the powers that be knew that was coming down the pipe back then.

Hence why we all said, “follow the money.”

But, after watching Fox and Friends and seeing this clip, I can’t just call PAM a big dumb goofy anymore. In addition to that, he’s actually very calculating and dangerous.

Under the guise of 80,000 people coming together to pray in Texas, he has successfully began his attempt to gut Black and Brown solidarity, within a generation that is actually statistically more unified across racial and religious divides than previous generations, using scripture and alarmist rhetoric.

This ain’t just because conservatives and Republicans are scared at what’s happening in Texas right now. He’s telling you right here; if so goes Texas, so goes the rest of the nation. And pushing this on a generation that has reaped the benefits of every other generation’s social movements, to the point it has made them apathetic…and because they don’t value history, will prove successful.
