a month agoYes — if you mean Marsha (Martine Theeuwen) from Ian Van Dahl, the song is “Castles in the Sky.” She is the woman singing the original hit recording, and she also helped write it. And yes, she absolutely had an issue with being cut out as the public face of the song. The story is actually pretty rough. Marsha recorded the vocals, but Cindy Mertens was put in the music video and lip-synced to Marsha’s voice. Cindy also appeared publicly with the act before Annemie Coenen eventually became Ian Van Dahl’s regular frontwoman. Marsha talked about it directly in a 2001 interview. She said that having someone else replace her for the performances “put me through some really tough times.” She also said she considered it disrespectful both to herself and to the audience because people watching the video or performances could reasonably believe the woman they were seeing was the person actually singing. It went beyond simply being disappointed about not appearing in the video. She felt that what happened damaged her career and separated her publicly from a song that she had helped create. She was particularly bothered that another woman could be presented while her voice was coming out of the speakers. So if you’ve been watching that famous “Castles in the Sky” video thinking the woman on screen is Marsha — she isn’t. You’re hearing Marsha, but you’re looking at Cindy Mertens. And there’s actually more to the dispute, including what Marsha said about who really wrote the vocal melody and lyrics. That part gets even more interes
