4 years ago today, Raye and 070 Shake released β€˜Escapism.’ Swapping the glittery pop of her earlier work for something edgier and more hip-hop influenced, Raye delivers 'Escapism.' in an almost rapped style. The trip-hop-tinged track began with a beat from her collaborator Mike Sabath, and she freestyled the song around it before calling 070 Shake, a Kanye West signee who had already charted five times on the Hot 100 as a writer. The result is a candid portrait of a night spent drinking and partying to dodge heartbreak, and it launched the album 'My 21st Century Blues' ahead of its February 2023 release. Raye put it out independently through Human Re Sources in October 2022, paired with 'The Thrill Is Gone.' Her video, co-directed with Otis Dominique and released on November 9, used point-of-view cameras to follow a chaotic night through a string of clubs. TikTok then took over, pushing the song onto the UK chart at number 31 in late November and up to number one in January 2023, the first chart-topper for both artists and Raye's first as a solo act. The song also crossed borders, topping Ireland and Denmark, reaching number nine in Canada, and landing at number 22 on the Billboard Hot 100 as the first Hot 100 entry for both. It earned the 2023 Ivor Novello Award for Best Contemporary Song for Raye, 070 Shake, and Mike Sabath, and later picked up multi-platinum certifications from Australia to a Diamond in France.
