Cancellation is a two-part process. The first part expands the definition of harm, from the physical to the verbal to the conceptual. The second uses that expanded definition as a pretext to get someone fired, cut off from friends and family, and made toxic to anyone who associates with them. The second part has always existed: long before social media, if you walked into work screaming slurs, you’d be fired, and anyone who crossed universally agreed-upon boundaries of speech and behavior risked professional and reputational damage. What makes cancellation distinct is that it moves past the boundaries most people would recognize and keeps widening what counts as a transgression, while tightening the pressure on third parties, like employers, friends, and family, to do the punishing. That’s why every lecture, op-ed, and infographic about some newly discovered form of invisible harm works as the staging ground for a cancellation to come. Only once an idea like “beige paint is giving colonizer vibes” has been established in the abstract can it be used as the pretext for calling out a specific person. And because cancellation campaigns aren’t democratic, the propaganda doesn’t need majority support, only a zealous and vocal minority who believe it. The minority’s real audience is the employers, publishers, and deans who have their hands on the levers of power. In a culture that treats “believe victims” and “trust lived experience” as absolute, these gatekeepers never have to fully agree with an accusation. Hearing it repeated often and fervently enough is what makes them suspect that if they don’t concede to activist demands, they’ll be next on the chopping block. Keeping that fear alive requires the activists to spin two plates at once: presenting themselves in the media as utterly helpless in the face of ongoing oppression, while wielding the unilateral power to get anyone fired for any offense, real or imagined. Their power to persecute individuals grows in direct proportion to their sense of their own victimhood, which widens until even the most minor and abstract conflict with them counts as harm. Today’s infographics are tomorrow’s pink slips.
I’m looking forward to watching this tonight. Everyone should watch this debate (whether you like Mehdi Hasan or not) bc a debate between progressives and the Blue MAGA Zionist corporate wing (like Neera Tanden) is long overdue. I’m actually surprised she agreed because the establishment Dems usually will do anything to avoid this conversation. #neeratanden #mehdihasan #debate #democrats #democraticparty
