On 8 July, my buddy Jeff sent me the Instagram story of @57_peaks, a mountaineering page ranking the 57 Ultra-prominent peaks in the lower 48.
It read,
"LOOKING FOR A PARTNER
FOR GLACIER PEAK, WA
JULY 14TH
WANTING TO DO C2C.
MONSTER DAY
DM ME IF THAT'S IN YOUR
WHEELHOUSE AND WANT
TO GIVE IT A GO"
...
Glacier peak is the most remote stratovolcano in Washington. The route is 36 miles w/ ~11k ft of gain & involves glacier travel.
Most parties take a few days to complete it, but the 57Peaks guy, Weston, wanted to do it in one.
I thought to myself, who is crazy enough to drop everything and make it out to Washington for an ultra-marathon attempt at a mountain, with a total stranger, on less than a week's notice?
...
Then I realized... "oh wait, I am." 😅
...
So I sent Weston a message that said,
"I could pull that off. Lmk"
...
Well, fast forward to Monday afternoon, & I'm meeting this stranger from the internet at the airport.
...
Now, I'll spare you the novel on how amazing the hike was or a lecture on how spontaneity and ambition pays off.
Sufficeth to say, the views were SPECTACULAR and I feel really blessed to complete such a fun objective!
