I really love this quote from Ken Sugimori. It's taken from the Pokémon Trading Card Game Illustration Collection.
IMO some of Sugimori's best work for the TCG shows through in his trainer cards. They might not be the most valuable or eye catching, but he treats them like manga panels.
Ken dreamed of being a manga artist from an early age, but gave up on that dream to help finish Red and Green. While he still illustrated manga over the years, he has stated that he never really felt he talented enough to make a career of it.
