Delhi’s iconic Jantar Mantar, a landmark associated with political demonstrations for over three decades, has officially lost its status as a designated protest site. In a major decision announced on October 12, Delhi Police has de-notified the historic location and designated three alternative venues for protests and demonstrations across the national capital. According to Standing Order No. L&O/48/2026, issued by Delhi Police Commissioner Anurag Kumar, the newly designated protest venues are Ramlila Ground, Burari Ground and CBD Ground in East Delhi. The decision follows recommendations from a committee constituted by the Union Ministry of Home Affairs to identify alternative locations for citizens to exercise their right to peaceful assembly. The order further states that detailed and revised Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for demonstrations at these three venues will be issued separately. It partially modifies the earlier standing order dated April 28, 2022. The development comes just days after tensions erupted between Delhi Police and the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) over its planned October 10 protest demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. Police had denied permission for the demonstration, citing insufficient advance notice, previous non-compliance with directions and concerns surrounding public safety and traffic management. Despite extensive barricading and security deployments around Jantar Mantar, protesters subsequently gathered at multiple locations across Delhi, leading to detentions and confrontations with police. The decision has drawn sharp criticism from CJP leaders. Ashutosh Ranka sarcastically questioned why Mount Everest should not also be declared a protest site, while Abhijeet Dipke warned that the entire country could become Jantar Mantar if spaces for dissent continued to shrink. Jantar Mantar has served as one of India’s most recognisable venues for public demonstrations since 1993, bringing political movements and citizens’ demands within close proximity to the country’s seat of power.
