Not much, what ab you?

Peering through the window of her family’s van, Mavis Richardson pulled into the dropoff area of Carson Elementary School, the public school where she used to be a student.

A year ago, the 10-year-old wore a purple dress and matching sneakers. She now donned a Cornerstone Christian Schools navy and red plaid skirt.

Mavis and her siblings had all attended public schools until this fall. Now, four of the family’s six school-aged children are enrolled in private schools, with tuition paid for under the state’s new private school voucher program.

The vouchers brought more than new classmates and morning routines. Mavis’ parents, Nichole and Trevor McDaniel, had eyed Cornerstone since joining the affiliated church in 2022. The voucher program was an answered prayer.

But the family has faced unexpected costs, struggled to get support for a son with disabilities and navigated logistical hurdles along the way.
