NORFOLK, Va. — A 16-year-old Norview High School student was killed and another teenager was injured Wednesday afternoon after gunfire erupted in a school parking lot following dismissal, according to Norfolk police. Officers were called to the 6800 block of Sewells Point Road around 2:25 p.m. after reports of a shooting. When police arrived, they found two 16-year-old boys suffering from gunshot wounds. Both teenagers were taken to a hospital. Police said one victim had been shot in the upper body and was suffering from life-threatening injuries. The other teenager was shot in the lower body and sustained injuries that were not considered life-threatening. The teenager with the more serious injuries later died. He was identified as #KevonDrumgold, a student at Norview High School. Norfolk Police Chief Mark Talbot said the shooting followed a confrontation between groups of teenagers who were in the parking lot after school. Investigators believe a dispute escalated before someone from one of the groups fired several shots. Norfolk Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Jeff Rose confirmed that a student was killed in the shooting. Police said investigators have identified a person they believe was responsible for the shooting and are actively searching for the suspect. Authorities had not announced an arrest at the time of the latest update. Norfolk Commonwealth’s Attorney Ramin Fatehi also responded to the scene and urged parents to talk with their children about resolving conflicts without violence. He encouraged anyone who witnessed the shooting or has information about what happened to cooperate with investigators.
