Okay I can make this post now.
It’s been difficult these past few days trying to put these words together. Even now I will undoubtedly fall short.
I write this message from my home in Texas that I share with my family, yes because I have worked hard over the years but more importantly because I have had people in my life show me what the result of hard work and persistence would lead to. Perhaps, none more than Robert Craig.
First he was my instructor, then he was my colleague, but he has always been a positive black male figure in my life. I got my driver license in his car after failing the test two previous times in a different car. He let me practice in his car way before I even took the test and it just never felt right. He showed me patience when I accidentally hit a parked car (yes it happened because I was feeling myself behind the wheel when he let me drive solo before I got my license 🤷🏾♂️) No matter where I went if I ran into someone remotely close to drumming in NY, they knew Bob. He helped out countless students when family fell short.
I thought to myself this is the kind of legacy I want to creat me for myself. I want every room that speaks of drums in NY to mention my name in a positive light. I want to be depended on, trusted to make percussion sections great, and I want to be loved. Bob had all that and then some. He had this way of instilling confidence in us that was unshakable. We could do anything, and because of him we have done everything!!
My educational philosophy is; I will change the world two sticks at a time. It all started with two that Bob helped me master.
Our interaction with individuals over time help us form the person we want to be. This was a big part of it for me. I’m sharing this here because if you know me even a little, now you have an idea as to why I am the way I am.
Rest well Robert Craig your lessons have transcended this lifetime and we are all indebted to you, for your kindness, generosity and sacrifice.
R.I.P. Robert Craig
