Changing your tires is one of the most important parts of vehicle maintenance, yet it’s something many drivers overlook until a problem becomes impossible to ignore. Tires are the only part of a vehicle that makes direct contact with the road, meaning their condition affects braking, steering, acceleration, and overall safety. As tires wear down, their tread becomes shallower, reducing their ability to channel water away from the contact surface. This increases the risk of hydroplaning, especially during heavy rain, while worn tires can also struggle to maintain traction in snowy or icy conditions.

Most passenger vehicle tires begin with approximately 8–10 millimeters of tread depth, but they gradually lose that rubber through everyday driving. In many places, the legal minimum is around 1.6 millimeters, although replacing tires before reaching that point is often recommended for better wet-weather performance. Driving on completely bald tires is particularly dangerous because the protective rubber has worn away, potentially exposing the internal structure and increasing the risk of tire failure. Regularly checking tire pressure, monitoring tread depth, and rotating tires according to manufacturer recommendations can help extend their lifespan. If your tire is so smooth that you can practically see your reflection in it, replacing it is long overdue.
