India’s biggest-ever FDI in the financial sector! The Indian government has approved the sale of a 60.72% stake in IDBI Bank to Canada-based Fairfax Financial Holdings for ₹52,878 crore (approximately $5.56 billion). The deal marks a major shift in the ownership of one of India’s prominent banking institutions and is set to become the largest foreign direct investment in India’s financial sector. WHO IS BUYING IDBI BANK? The buyer is Fairfax Financial Holdings, led by Indian-origin Canadian billionaire Prem Watsa. Its subsidiary, 10955230 Canada Inc., has been approved as the strategic buyer. HOW WILL THE DEAL WORK? Total deal value: ₹52,878 crore Stake being sold: 60.72% Government of India stake sold: 30.48% LIC stake sold: 30.24% Government’s remaining stake: 15% LIC’s remaining stake: 19% The approved purchase price is ₹81 per share. The transaction remains subject to the required regulatory steps before completion. WHY IS THIS DEAL IMPORTANT? IDBI Bank has a history of financial stress and received support from LIC after the bank ran into difficulties. The government now expects private ownership to help strengthen the bank’s competitiveness, management and ability to raise capital. Fairfax has also indicated plans to bring some of its existing Indian financial-services investments, including interests in insurance and capital markets, under IDBI Bank, subject to regulatory approvals. For the government, the sale is also part of its broader disinvestment strategy to unlock value from public assets and reduce its ownership in businesses. THE BIG PICTURE This is more than a bank stake sale. It is a major foreign investment in India’s financial system and could reshape IDBI Bank’s future as it moves toward private control. The key questions now are how quickly the deal receives final regulatory clearance, how Fairfax plans to grow the bank, and what the change means for customers, employees and minority shareholders. #IDBIBank #Fairfax #PremWatsa #Banking #FDI IndianEconomy Privatisation StockMarket BusinessNews
