Stop deleting photos with messy backgrounds.

While scouting around Shoreline Lake, this Great Egret was perched perfectly, but the surrounding dry brush completely ruined the clean aesthetic. Instead of deleting the file, I used a targeted editing workflow to isolate the subject and create a dramatic, fine-art portrait.

Here is the technical breakdown to save for your next edit:
The Isolation Mask: I used the Select Subject tool in Lightroom to separate the Egret from the tangled background. Pay close attention to the fine feather fringes along the neck—don't let your mask clip those details.

Crushing the Environment: By inverting the mask and dropping the shadows, blacks, and background exposure to absolute zero, the distracting branches completely disappear.

Protecting the Whites: Egrets are incredibly easy to overexpose against dark backgrounds. I carefully pulled down the highlights and whites to ensure the delicate plumage retained its natural texture instead of turning into a solid white block.

Cleaning Intersecting Lines: I brought the file into Photoshop to carefully heal out the stray branches that were physically crossing over the bird's chest, ensuring a completely uninterrupted silhouette.

Splitting the subject from a busy environment completely shifts the mood from a casual bird sighting to a deliberate, high-end portrait.

I really enjoy watching reels like this. They are very inspiring and helpful. I had already seen the finished photo in a post, and I never imagined there were so many complex branches in front of the subject. You removed them so naturally and seamlessly. Truly impressive, Luis 🫶✨

🔥 Great job buddy! I wouldn’t have bothered at this point but there are many pics I deleted cause i couldn’t get a clean colored background. Maybe I should follow a workshop with you instead of the ones i have lined up 😉
