"The smaller market, lower revenue teams, in general, are the most profitable teams in baseball."

MLBPA Interim Executive Director Bruce Meyer believes it would be "eye-opening" for fans to see how much some teams profit from revenue sharing under the current system.

Exactly. I’m tired of hearing Monfort bitch when he’s massed hand over fist in cash. So much so that he could hand St Louis $51m of it over to get rid of a HOF 3rd baseman.

A bit unfair to call SD a small market when they can use most of so-cal as a “fan base.” Obv the dodgers, angels and other cali teams dilute what that is in total, but the potential is there for more. The city of Milwaukee is grossly outnumbered compared to nearly every other major city. I don’t want baseball to be reduced to major metropolises only

Salary cap and floor. Lock the players out! If we have to lose an entire season to fix baseball, let’s do it!!

These teams benefit by getting a welfare check every year from the teams that go over the CBT. The CBT for the first year is 20%, 2nd year 30% & 3rd year 50% of what the team goes over the max number for that year. Than there's a surcharge if the team exceeds a certain number over the CBT which equals out to: $20-40m over is 12.5%, $40-60m over is 42.5% and $60m over equals 60%... these penalties are also increased if they go over consecutive years. So teams like the Marlins, Pirates etc are incentivised to not pay for players because theyre going to receive massive paychecks every year from the teams that do spend. Meanwhile they charge you the fan $20+ dollars for a beer, $15+ for a hotdog and $40+ for parking etc and pawn it off on player payroll. So between ticket prices, merchandise sales and TV rights deals theyre doing just fine regardless of what's being spread through the media. This isnt about those teams not being able to compete, its about the greedy owners giving less and less to the players who are in fact the product and drive their revenue streams. Dont be fooled here like these teams aren't turning a profit and cant afford to spend to get talent, its about maximizing profit without caring about fielding a compettive squad. Why are low spending teams like the Brewers and Indians winning if there is no parody? Its all a lie. You want to be competitive you have to have a great front office that drafts/trades/minor leagues better than everyone else. The real way to make even more parody is to make a floor not a ceiling and take away the welfare checks of the CBT. Make teams that dont meet a certain threshold of spending incur the same penalties for those that go over and watch how fast these other teams start spending. The real problem lies in the vetting process. They approve new owners who arent willing to spend into the league. These guys see teams as a business and not as a competitive sports league but brag to their millionaire/billionaire friends about how they own a pro sports franchises while chilling on their yachts. Penalize owners who see teams in this light and dont care about being competitive, thats the real detriment

A salary cap AND salary floor are the only way to make this fair to small market teams. Local tv money is the biggest problem for competitiveness in the MLB. The Dodgers generate just under 400M/yr just from local TV money while small market teams generate about 1/10 of that. Say what you want about cheap owners but nobody buy a business or team to LOSE money, salary cap or 100% revenue sharing are the only solutions to fix this problem
